Living & Deceased: Liver transplant is done from organ donors who express the wish to donate after death. Liver transplant can also be done with living donors in select centers.

Mostly: The vast majority of liver transplant organs come from someone who is brain dead. This means they have no blood flow to their brain nor brain function but the machines and medicines are keeping their organs working. Their organs can be procured and used for transplant. Live donors (healthy individuals) can donate half of their liver to someone they know who needs a transplant.
