Can vary: Most maintenance anti-rejection medications (those taken daily) included a calcineurin inhibitor: tacrolimus (prograf) or cyclosporin; and an antimetabloite: Mycophenolate Mofetil (mmf, myfortic). Some daily regimens may also include a steroid (prednisone). In rare instances a patient will be on an mtor inhibitor, sirolimus (rapamune) instead of a calcineurin inhibitor.

Mostly: The vast majority of liver transplant organs come from someone who is brain dead. This means they have no blood flow to their brain nor brain function but the machines and medicines are keeping their organs working. Their organs can be procured and used for transplant. Live donors (healthy individuals) can donate half of their liver to someone they know who needs a transplant.

It does not need: The patient's body controls a transplanted kidney through hormones released into the blood. These hormones will affect how much blood the kidney filters and how much urine is produced. Nerve supply is not important in the actual functioning of a kidney.
