A 45-year-old member asked:
what's an esophageal ph test done for?

A check for GERD: Ph testing can check your esophagus for exposure to substances regurgitated from the stomach-- for acid (such as bravo ph capsule implanted on your esophagus) as well as non-acid reflux (ph impedance testing). The test correlates your symptoms in real-time with what comes up into your esophagus & throat. Ph testing also has utility in assessing the efficacy of acid-blocker drugs.

What type of doctor can order an esophageal pH test?

Several pH tests: Ph testing is a measure in "real time" of reflux. Bravo pH testing implants a probe on your esophagus and records how much time your esophagus is exposed to acid. An impedance pH probe on the other hand is a thin tube passed into your esophagus by nose, and it measures whatever moves upward into, or stay in, your esophagus (acid or base). Your gastroenterologist (gi doctor) performs either test.

What should I bring along to do a esophageal pH test?

Don't eat !: Whether your pH test involves placement on your esophagus of a bravo pH probe or passage of a impedance pH probe into your esophagus it is important to follow your doctor's pre-procedure prep instructions. Generally, the tests are done on an empty stomach. Your doctor may ask you to take your acid-blocker drugs as usual, or he/she may want the test performed without such drugs in your system.
