Other glands job: Most people have 4 parathyroid glands. In over 85% of cases of hyperparathyroidism, only one is englarged and problematic. So when removed the other 3 glands take over and maintain balance in your body.

Improvement : Most people begin feeling better immediately. Your calcium level returns to normal range almost immediately. It will take months for your bones to recover from long term calcium loss, but other symptoms will usually abate.

Equilibration: After Parathyroidectomy, the calcium will drop. This will stimulate the suppressed remaining parathyroid glands to start making PTH. The PTH will rise which will raise the calcium being released from the bones. This additional calcium will cause the parathyroid glands to decrease their PTH production and you will reach an equilibrium.
