What can cause a coffee-colored coat on my tongue?

Black hairy tongue: It is a condition caused by lengthening of the filiform papilla of the tongue. This in turn can cause it to become stained easily by coffee, food or tobacco. It can also occur after taking pepto-bismol or can be a side effect from taking penicillin. Certain types of bacteria and yeast can also be a factor.

Many causes.: There are a couple of things that can cause a coated tongue. First it could just be a buildup of food debris. Cleaning your tongue is important to prevent this. Second it yould be a yeast infection and this would be thick with a cottage cheese appearance that you can scrape off. Medications like pepto can cause, so can vitamin deficiencies. Your dentist can tellyou what is going on.
