By symptoms: Hospice care is tailored to control symptoms. There is an assessment by the care team to look at medical symptoms as well as emotional needs. The family situation is also evaluted. Most programs have a very integrated approach to care.

End of life care.: Hospice is meant for those who seemingly at the end of life, although that end can still be many months away. The emphasis of hospice care is not trying to save the life, but to give comfort to the individual as their death approaches. This can include pain management and emotional support.
