Why might i have developed a hernia?

Variable.: Hernias are holes in the abdominal wall. They often develop in the groin region, belly button, or are associated with scars from prior operations. Many people are born with these, although it may take many years to develop. Excessive lifting, obesity, smoking, steroid use may all increase the risk of developing a hernia.

Genetics: While there are many environmental reasons one may get a hernia (trauma, abdominal operation, etc.), most hernias are associated with occult collagen disorders whereby the stronger type1 collagen is outnumbered by the weaker type 3 collagen. Collagen is the strength part of the connective tissue that holds us together. There is no clinical test or treatment for this currently.
