Hypochondriacs: Hypochondriacs suffer fears of having serious medical disease, despite having appropriate medical evaluations. Often based on misinterpreting bodily sensations, this preoccupation persists and causes clinically significant distress & impairment in social, work, and other functioning. Doctors can help with these anxieties, appropriately monitor overall health, & avoid unnecessary tests/treatments.

Hypochondriacs: Doctors can determine if the person actually has a medical problem. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is often the most effective approach to treating hypochondria. Psychoeducation and exposure therapy have been used as well as treatment with antidepressant medications when warranted.
