He needs help.: "hard drug habit" means opioid/heroin? If so, he needs to not only detoxify, but enter into a prolonged treatment environment to help him learn about and maintain sobriety. The risk is very high for death or severe outcomes if this isn't done. Do not be codependent with him. Addicts lie and steal to support their habit. You need to be tough, realistic and supportive. But not a soft touch.
