A member asked:

Could an epidural cause birth defects?

NO: Birth defects happen early in the pregnancy for the most part. An epidural happens in labor - it can't possibly cause a birth defect.

No!: Intrapartum anesthesia has nothing to do with birth defects - those occur much earlier in pregnancy (frequently at conception and always in the first trimester). Epidural is an excellent choice for pain control during labor and delivery, even though it can increase maternal temperature, prolong labor and increase the operative delivery rate.

No. never.: Birth defects are usually in the 1st and 2nd trimester. An epidural is used when the baby is fully formed or in the last wks of the last trimester.. It's safety is dependent on the person doing the epidural procedure.
