In anesthesia, what is mac?

Monitored Care: During monitored anesthesia care (mac) patients are given medications which cause sedation and relaxation so that minor procedures can be performed. Mac differs from general anesthesia in that the patient continues to breathe on their own without the use of a breathing tube.

2 meanings: One is "monitored anesthesia care, " which generally encompasses sedations ranging from light to deep. It can also mean "mean alveolar concentration, " the amount of anesthetic gas needed for 50% of subjects to not respond to incision during a study. This, and related values, helps us ensure that you are safely anesthetized and not awake during general anesthesia.

MAC: Mac stands for monitored anesthesia care. This is a spectrum of anesthesia that ranges from a very light sedative to almost complete general anesthesia. The anesthesiologist will be able to change your state of anesthesia depending both on you and the surgery you are undergoing.
