Yes: Folic acid has been proven to prevent neural tube defects, a very serious birth defect. This occurs during the first month of pregnancy, often before women know they are pregnant, so it is wise to supplement with at least 400 mcg of Folic Acid if there is any chance of becoming pregnant, as well as eating dark leafy greens & other dietary sources. http://www.folicacidpregnancy.net/ has more info.
