Yes, but not best.: Although a parent can refuse vitamin k by injection (shot) for their newborn, the pediatric and family practice societies of both canada and the United States strongly recommend this approach, since studies have shown that it is the most effective way to protect a baby from hemorrhagic disease. If a shot is refused, then a series of three oral doses, given during the first 8 weeks, is recommended.
