A member asked:

If taking prednisone, how much calcium supplementation do you need?

Calcium-prednisone: To prevent osteoporosis from chronic prenisone therapy, more than calcium is required. A healthy diet, plus supplements of vitamin d3, good sources of calcium from diet and supplements, magnesium, zinc, boron and strontium all help. Active weight bearing exercise is important.

Depends on diet: Your personal needs for calcium supplementation depends on how much calcium you are getting in your diet. Vitamin d is needed to absorb calcium so you need to make sure you are not vitamin d deficient. Prednisone taken for more than 8 weeks has been shown to contribute to bone density loss. See your doctor and ask if he/she would recommend getting a DEXA scan and vitamin d levels checked.
