Tonsillitis can be caused by infectious bacteria or viruses strep throat refers to the bacterial organism sometimes responsible tor tonsillitis. It is characterized by beefy red, ulcerated, very painful tonsillitis. Strep throat remains the most common reason for removing the tonsils.
