Yes: If your symptoms are severe enough that you are having suicidal thoughts or if you are impulsive enough to cause a threat to yourself or someone else then you need to be hospitalized. Otherwise bipolar disorder can be treated on an outpatient basis. There are many good treatments for bipolar disorder. Bipolar: Having a good psychotherapist & a doctor to monitor your medications, sure. Hospitalization is in cases where patient is a danger to themselves or others, or cannot take care of themselves such as acutely psychotic.
