3 possible ways: The simplest answer is that water can enter your ear canal to block your hearing. Diving to certain depths will affect the pressure in your middle ear. You may not be able to "clear" your ears with swallowing or the valsalva maneuver (eustachian tube dysfunction). If you dive to significant depths, the pressure changes can potentially damage your hearing permanently via a perilymphatic fistula.

Hearing loss: Hl after swimming can only be due to water entering the ear canal or external otitis or wax. In both cases the hearing loss is temporary. In diving you may have serious injuries such as barotrauma.
