Is it common to have an extra rib?

Extra rib: You are talking about a cervical rib which occurs about 0.5% of the time in the general population. That number can be higher or lower in different groups but that is normal frequency.

1 in 200 people: About 1 in 200 people are born with an extra rib called a cervical rib. Because this is something that you are born with, it is known as a congenital condition. At the back, this rib connects to the seventh cervical vertebra in your neck. At the front, in some people a cervical rib can be 'floating' and have no connection.
