Toothpaste: Many toothpastes contain a chemical called sodium laurel sulfate. This is a foaming agent that is also used as an engine degreaser. This is the cause of most canker sores. Pain is from the tissue damage. Time heals them. A dental laser will often help to get rid of them sooner and may prevent them from coming back in the same area. Use a non-foaming toothpaste such as closys.

Depends: Not sure what you mean by mouth ulcers. Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Cause of canker sores remains unclear and has multiple possible triggers. An ulceration can also be caused by trauma.
