Probably virus: Most oral ulcers are either apthous ulcers (canker sores) or herpetic ulcers. Both are viral and cannot be eliminated from your body. A fever, exposure to sun, and stress, among other things, can stimulate these viruses to produce ulcers. Your dentist can prescribe meds that may reduce the duration and severity of the ulcers, and, very importantly, rule out anything more serious.

Many causes: Ulcers can be the result of injury to the mouth as in biting the lip or bumping the gums with the toothbrush. They can also be due to medications and allergic type reaction to foods. More serious ulcers are due to various illness and even cancer. The treatment will depend on the cause of your ulcer.
