Eat fewer calories: During the first 2 months, a new mom should rest or just do light chores. She should breastfeed and should eat healthy foods (but not over-eat). After the first 2 months, mom can start exercising more, but the amount of weight loss will most likely depend on how few calories she eats each day. She must avoid overeating. Doctors can prescribe a little medication to improve her mood.

Blue normal, dep not: The vast majority of new moms experience the Baby Blues. It is likely related to hormone changes, lack of sleep, and stress, and is totally normal (though no fun). However, if your depressive symptoms have lasted for an extended period (more than 2 weeks) you may be experiencing a major depressive disorder (previously called post partum depression) and a therapist or psychiatrist can help.
