Merits respect: Guns are a national fetish in the usa. Ownership requires only the cash with no requirement for skills, background, etc. While some laws require these things, if you go to a gun show, it is open season. You are right to be respectful of guns and they are scary in this country. There are 30, 000 deaths per year from guns and 70% of the deaths are to friends/family of the gun owner.

Gun safety class: The response above is wholly inaccurate. Federal firearms license is required for a business to sell a gun and background check is mandatory. These requirements are not necessary in a private sale, just like in the private sale of any other tool (e.g. automobile). The best way to lose your fear of guns is through education. Take a firearm safety class, then practice regularly at the range.
