How long does it take to recover from an ankle replacement?

4-12 months: The immobility and bulk of the recovery after a total ankle replacement is in the first 4 months. For the ankle to heal completely, where you are relatively back to normal will take about 1 year.

Surgery recovery: It takes skin 2-3 weeks to heal and then you will be started in therapy. It may be 1 -2 years before you have finished recovering, slowly improving until up to 6 months. Don't expect the end result to reach 100%. The goal is improved motion, decreased pain.

Months: Recovery from ankle replacement takes many months. You will be able to bear weight relatively soon after the surgery. However, it will take many months to regain full range of motion and normalize your walking pattern. For more information please visit www.Orthodoc.Aaos.Org/footankle.
