Probably not a fad: About 1% of population develop a disease called celiac-sprue from gluten and many more have gluten sensitivity. However, if you have neither of these problems, it is fine to eat gluten despite the hyperbole spreading about it. Although many sources of gluten contain genetically modified gluten, there is no good evidence that it causes long term problems for those without sensitivity or celiac dx.
