Root Canal Therapy: "endo" implies "inside" and inside is where the nerve in a tooth resides. Endodontists diagnose and treat tooth pain from infected nerves. This is known as root canal therapy. It involves removing infected nerve tissue, cleansing and shaping the "canal" system, and placing a special filling material. They also do surgical procedures at the ends of the roots for stubborn infections.

Diagnose/treat teeth: Inside teeth is a nerve and blood vessels. When this tissue dies it must be removed and then the inside "canal" of the tooth sealed/filled with a special material. That is root canal therapy. Sometime it is not successful in which case a surgical approach is needed.

"Endo"=inside: Endodontists treat problems related to the tissues located inside the tooth. When the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected and is or will cause disease, the endodontist might perform root canal therapy to treat it. Other procedures include retreatment of root canals, or surgical treatment of root canals. Endodontists are also experts at addressing dental trauma, and often diagnosing pain.
