Patient's own skin: A graft that is expected to "take" and heal long-term requires it be from the recipient patient. We can harvest full-thickness grafts (and surgically close the donor site) or use split-thickness grafts by utilizing specialized dermatomes (blades) to take the top skin layers. The donor site heals with some scarring, but you have a graft to cover a damaged area. Grafts can be meshed to cover more.
