In the ear: Peripheral means not in the brain. Peripheral hearing loss is hearing loss caused by damage to the ear or nerve conducting the hearing to the brain.

Peripheral hearing : Peripheral hearing loss as opposed to central hearing loss: sound waves are trannsmitted thro ext auditory canal, ear drum, ossicles, cochlea. The sound is processed in cochlear hair cells and impulses pass thro auditory nerve to auditory cortex in temporal lobe. Hearing loss due to a defect anywhere from ext aid canal to auditory nerve is called peripheral hearing loss.
