Are cerebral palsy and epilepsy related?

8 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

At least 30 percent: Cerebral palsy is a result of injury to the brain that affects motor function. This injury can cause a scar effect that increases risk for seizures. Epilepsy is the condition of the risk for seizures. Therefore cerebral palsy can be associated with risk for epilepsy.

Yes: Epilepsy refers to a seizure disorder. Children with CP have a static brain injury. This can result in some cases in abnormal bursts of activity (seizures). Not every child w CP has seizures but certainly more than the general population.

Coexist: Cerebral palsy is caused by an injury to the brain. That same brain injury can cause seizures as well. They can coexist or present independently.
