Cold sores: Your friend's children were very contagious and your 1 yo was definitely exposed if they kissed, shared toys and hands, etc. If you kissed or played with them you could also be potentially infected. Frequent hand washing precautions should be observed now. If your newborn develops a rash, fever, or irritation of the eyelids or eyes, contact your pediatrician immediately. Ban contact of your kids.

Exposure: There really isn't anything you can do now if your children have truly been exposed. However, the best way to prevent exposure if in the presence of other children or adults with active cold sore lesions is to avoid direct contact with the individuals with cold sores and their saliva. Don't share food or eating utensils. Be sure to sanitize the utensils and dishes used by these individuals.
