Fiber: You may not be getting enough fiber in your diet. Fiber helps add bulk to your stool, and slows it's transit through the colon. A slower transit time results in better-formed fecal matter, which makes for easier defecation. The pain in your side may be from the colon being irritated with "stuck stool." i agree. If no improvement, see your pcp. Also , watch for appendicitis. #1 cause is fecolith.

Bowel regimen: Long term your best solution to constipation is to use fiber, increased water intake, stool softners, and laxatives, to achieve two soft bowel movements per day, no straining. In the meantime a visit to your doc, to get an exam and ask about an ultrasound to look for appendicitis, or a colonoscopy. At age 50 you are supposed to get your first colonoscopy for screening purposes.
