A member asked:

Why do people bite their nails?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pleasure: The lips are populated with a variety of nerve endings that give pleasure as they are stimulated. It helps a newborn figure out how to feed when they have never been hungry; helps the toddler get through a rough day with thumb sucking; makes us enjoy kissing & smoking & chewing your nails. If it weren't for society frowning on the process, more would probably do it.
