A hole in the heart: A ventricular septal defect is one of the most common forms of congenital heart disease, and it consists of a hole in the muscular septum that separates the right and left ventricles (lower pumping chambers). The size and location of the hole determines whether or not surgery is necessary to fix the defect. In many instances, a vsd may spontaneously close without the need for an operation.
