When he is well: It takes a considerable amount of force to break a hip, so your friend may have other problems that need to be resolved (or not, i hope). Your friends doctors will let him know as he gets better.

Depends...: If he requires surgery for his leg, that would increase his length of stay compared to if he just got a cast. Once his fractures are dealt with, and there are no other health issues going on, pain control will be the limiting factor for being able to go home.
