How do you define child abuse of young athletes by coaches?

Most Olympic class: ...Athletes sustain at least some permanent damage to their bodies in training. There is a fine line between acceptable and unacceptable risks; but it's fair to say that any harm done by coaches for reasons other than helping the athlete achieve her goals is unacceptable.

Mostly verbal: Sports hazing will get a coach fired, but verbal abuse to motivate a player (who may be there only on pressure from parents) is both harmful and ineffective. A smart coach teachers rather than criticizes, and ridicule is counterproductive but happens. Even my own sports hero, joe montana, is on record that competitive athletics should only be for the youngster who wants to participate.
