Coughing up blood!!: While this can be a common side effect of the pressure and trauma of coughing it can also be very worrisome if she is coughing up or throwing up bright red blood. But, mucous tinged with blood can happen with ongoing and severe coughing. As long as she is not feverish or faint you can watch her at home. But, if she appears to be in any kind of stress please get to the er.

Hemoptysis...: Coughing up blood is called hemoptysis and it is a symptom that always requires seeing a doctor asap. If your roommate is also short of breath, he/she needs to go to the er now! the most common cause is bronchitis but a work-up needs to be done to be certain it is not more serious and to provide the right treatment.
