Coughing blood: The most common reason for coughing up blood in an infection. However, we always worry about rare things lik cancers in the lungs or other conditions such as sarcoidosis. This is certainly worth seeing your doctor and at least getting a chest x-ray.

See a doctor: Coughing up blood is not a good thing. Many things can cause this. If you have had a cold with frequent coughing, you may see some blood tinged phlegm but that is usually from irritation. If there is a history of night sweats, weight loss and/or fever i might be concerned for tuberculosis. Please see your doctor immediately if this fits what you have been experiencing.

Infections, cancer: Coughing up blood can be from bronchitis from t.B or other lung infections or can be from lung cancer. It could also be blood coughed up from the esophagus from varices. This is not a normal symptom and you should consult a physician as soon as possible.

Etiology?: Please consider seeing an md/do soon! hemoptysis (coughing up blood) could be many things, and they could be very serious. Examples are pulmonary embolus (blood clot in lungs); lung cancer; bleeding disorder; lung infection; heart failure; other trauma. Let me know your other symptoms, and we can try to narrow down the cause.
