8 weeks: You could expect to be in hospital 4-6 days. After that the usual restrictions are no driving or heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks. During that time you can walk, take showers, and relax.

A few months...: It will take some time before you can get back to doing everything that you were doing before surgery. If you have the sternum cut for the surgery, the longest recovery time is for the bone to heal. For the first month we recommend no heavy lifting more than about 10 pounds. No driving. For the second month you can lift up to 25 pounds and drive. By the third month you can go skydiving.
