Labs and X-rays: First you have to make sure there aren't any other causes of true obstruction. This is done with a combination of x-rays or scans, physical examination, review of the medical history, and laboratory tests. After other causes have been eliminated, then the patient is treated for pseudo-obstruction, also called ogilve's syndrome.

Obstruction: In true mechanical intestinal obstruction abdominal plain xrays show characteristic patterns,significant cramping,vomiting and inability to pass stools along with marked abdominal distension often occur. In pseudobstruction, ,some abdominal bloating occurs, but the other symptoms and signs are much less noticeable or absent. I would be interested in how an abdominal surgeon would answer this
