A 51-year-old member asked:

help docs! i'm trying to find out what causes an obstruction of the intestine?

Hernia, scar tissue: The two most common causes are hernias and scar tissue. A hernia is a defect in the abdominal cavity. The intestine gets stuck in this defect, causing a blockage. If it stays too long, this portion of the intestine can die. Similarly, scars in the abdomen, usually from previous surgery, can result in a blockage when the intestine gets tangles around the scar tissue. Other causes are less likely.

INTESTINAL CANCER: To get follow-ups for intestinal cancer treatments, you have to ask the doctor or doctors who have been treating you. If the surgery was for a small growth, it would not be as often as for a larger, more extensive cancer. Do ask your doctor and surgeon about this. I'm sure they told you when and how often to return.
