Urethral disease.: It's relatively uncommon, as urinary retention in men is usually caused by an enlarged prostate obstructing the flow of urine out of the bladder. But urine can be held up in the urethra in cases of urethral stricture & meatal stenosis, where the tunnel is narrowed by scar tissue, and if there is a urethral diverticulum, an outpouching of the urethra where urine can collect.
