What special training do geriatricians receive?

Fellowship training: The geriatric fellowship training begins after 3 years of internal medicine or family medicine residency. It can be 1 to 3 years of fellowship training with or without research project. Some fellow trained geriatricians become primary care geriatrics: others become as a specialist. Or both. This fellow receives core training from hospice, neurology, psychiatry and rehabilitation.

Years more training: A geriatrician(md or do), has completed a 3 year residency in internal medicine or family medicine then has done either a 1, 2 or 3 year specialized fellowship in geriatrics(as a cardiologist or other specialist would do). After this training, one takes a board certifying test to prove ones expertise in the field. There are some docs that "grandfathered in" in the past without the fellowship.

Geared for the aged.: Geriatricians receive training in medical, psychological and nutritional issues that are unique to the elderly population. They also receive training in end-of-life issues.
