A member asked:

After a laparoscopy, how long will it take for the co2 to be absorbed and the swelling to go down?

A Few Days: In order to do laparoscopic surgery, the abdominal wall muscles need to be paralyzed. Co2 is then used to inflate the abdominal cavity, creating room to work. While we try to remove all of the co2, some may stay under the diaphragm causing shoulder pain. The co2 is usually absorbed w/in 1-2 days but it may take a bit longer for the normal muscle tone to return.

Few days: Usually the carbon dioxide gas used in laparoscopic surgery is removed at the end of the operation. There can be small amounts of gas that resolves in a few days. The abdominal wall may feel bloated or stretched after laparoscopic surgery & that also resolves over several days.
