Various methods: Simple antacids change the ph of the stomach contents making it less acid. Drugs histamine-2 blockers (pepcid) or proton pump inhibitors (prevacid) reduce acid by different mechanisms. Antiacids work quicker and "rebound" can occur and the heartburn can come back.
