How do emergency workers in hospitals empty the stomach of dangerous drugs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rarely: We rarely 'pump the stomach'. Typically only for recent (< 1 hr) significant overdoses (by amount or amount / kg) of drugs that are lethal and difficult to treat (tricyclic antidepressants, lithium, certain antihypertensives). More frequently we give activated charcoal which decreases absorption of most drugs if given within an hour. The biggest counterconcern is airway protection.
