What is the cause: Several possible reasons. You may be cutting the nail incorrectly causing the problem to recur. Sometimes there may be a hereditary predisposition for a nail to natural grow into skin, causing infection. A history of injury may have deformed the nail causing this to continually grow into skin and cause infection. Tight shoes may also be a factor.

Because the nail: Grows back exactly in the same way each time. If the nail borders are curled in, when they get to be a certain length they cause pressure at the tip of the toe. Break through the skin and you get the infection. Cut back the nail and the infection clears, but its a matter of time before it grows back to where it was. Stop the problem by a matrixectomy procedure, usually performed in the office.
