It depends: Depending on how severe your borderline traits are, you may be able to contain these at work and school - or in more limited relationships. They may be more noticeable in family or intimate relationships, because these can trigger old patterns and painful responses. Your psychiatrist may be wanting to impress upon you your need for treatment so that you can, through therapy, move beyond this.

Borderline traits: Traits are habitual patterns of behaviors, thoughts & emotions. Some borderline traits are impulsivity, neuroticism, disinhibited, low self-esteem. When personality features are prominent in individuals below age 18, we give the diagnosis of personality traits instead of personality disorder.

Borderline : Chances are, that borderline personality disorder is going to be very visible to everybody. Characteristics of this disorder are a disturbed sense of self, outbursts of emotion, a tendency to think of people and things in all good or all bad terms, impulsivity, drug and or alcohol abuse, acting out sexually, and self mutilating behaviors.
