Cool kindness: Don't say, "cheer up" or "you have no reason to be sad." help out with the little things in life. Keep up the friendship without its subject being the person's mood. You mean more than you think or your friend can show. If the person is seriously dysfunctional, offer a drive to her primary care physician for possible consideration of treatment for dysthymia / depression.
