Continue evaluating: A gynecologist can continue evaluating to see why a woman is having bleeding between menstrual cycles. The doctor can check for hormonal imbalances, especially if the patient is near menopause. A blood test can check for anemia, and also for low platelets or an abnormal pt/ptt (which can cause prolonged bleeding). A pelvic/abdominal ultrasound scan can look for tumors and other problems.

Agree with Dr. K: Two other issues: 1, Your doctor could prescribe you a type of birth control pill that would limit your period to once a year. 2. Take oral iron and multivitamins to prevent anemia. Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. For nutrition: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/.
