Subungual hematoma: If it was secondary to an injury likely it is a subungual hematoma or blood under the nail. It may fall off, if not as it grows just cut it. It will take few months to grow out.

Bruised: Usually when the nail turns dark purple, there is blood under the nail. Light purple colorsay mean oxygen levels in the area are low or lack of blood flow.
