Getting Fat: Calories in = calories burned to maintain weight. Despite all of the hoopla, fad diets, mystic messages given to the public by the soothsayers, the desire to believe in magical powers of specific foods, simple exercises reported to burn an inordinate amount of energy: it is all a fantasy. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.

The ONLY Answer: 1) we eat too many calories 2) we burn too few calories by moving and exercising too little. Even with a medical illness, over any period of time: (calories eaten) - (calories burned) / 3500 = pounds of fat gained. Always.

Multifactorial: There are many reasons including diet, exercise, lifestyle, food choices and eating habits. More people eat out now than 20 years ago and these foods tend to be high in fat and calories. Portion sizes have grown as well. More TV and videos and less activity is another contributing factor. So you can see its a combination of things and not just one reason alone.
